ICI and CSPN issue Q3 2006 529 statistics

Figures published by the Investment Company Institute using data collected by the College Savings Plans Network shows 4.9% growth in 529 assets during the third quarter of 2006 to a total of $97.4 billion. From the end of 2000 to September 30, 2006, assets in 529 prepaid tuition programs grew from $6.0 billion to $15.2 billion, while assets in 529 savings programs grew from $2.6 billion to $82.2 billion.

Florida has the largest prepaid tuition program with $5.6 billion, while Virginia has the largest combined savings program with $17.8 billion in its two plans. Next in order among the savings programs are Rhode Island ($7.1B), New Hampshire ($6.2B), New York ($5.6B), Ohio ($4.6 B), and Maine ($4.2B).
