South Carolina Prepaid program running a deficit

South Carolina's prepaid tuition fund had a shortfall of $11,014,364 as of Feb. 28, reports The State.com. A separate report showed a shortfall of $12.3 million as of the end of the last fiscal year, As of June 30, 2002, the deficit was $12.3 million as compared to a deficit of $973,000 one year earlier.

Tuition costs in South Carolina reportedly rose an average of 20 percent last year, compared to a projected rise of 7 percent.

In its most recent enrollment period, the program increased its contract prices nearly 20 percent.
